Chris Hughton clears up decision over 37-year-old Nottingham Forest player

Chris Hughton told Nottinghamshire Live that his decision to include Michael Dawson in his squad at Sheffield Wednesday was due to injuries.

The veteran enforcer was named in a matchday squad for the first time since Hughton arrived at the club.

He remained unused at Hillsborough but could be handed a final appearance for the Reds in next week’s game against Preston.

Dawson is out of contract in the summer and looked unlikely to be handed fresh terms by the club.

Injuries handed him an unlikely return to the squad yesterday though and Hughton was asked to clarify his reasoning afterwards.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: Toby (Figueiredo) came back and trained, then just felt the injury slightly again.

It was literally only yesterday that we made the decision to bring Michael into the squad.

In all honesty this wasn’t the type of game for sentiment.

It was a game against a team that needed to get a result. We had to show the correct respect to the competition, which I think we did with the way we wanted to perform.

Dawson began his career at Forest before moving onto play Premier League football with Tottenham and Hull City.

He returned in 2018 to add some experience to the Reds’ ranks.

Will Dawson get a farewell appearance next week?

The hope among supporters will be that he gets one final game at the club.

Preston don’t have anything to play for either so there isn’t a case of treating the competition with respect.

Dawson is deserving of one final game and provided he stays fit this week, the opportunity should present itself.

The centre-back has been a superb servant to the football club and the only shame is that supporters can’t be present to see him in action one final time.
