Derby County takeover agreed but fans aren’t convinced

A takeover of Nottingham Forest’s arch-rivals, Derby County, has been agreed.

Spanish businessman Erik Alonso, who owns the management company WBD Sports, is looking to take control of the Rams on behalf of his company, No Limits Sports LTD.

The deal is expected to be completed in the “near future” and is subject to EFL approval.

A Rams statement read: “Derby County Football Club wishes to confirm that a definitive agreement to purchase the club has been reached with No Limits Sports Limited.

“The transaction, which is still subject to the EFL’s Owners and Directors Test approval, is expected to close in the near future.

“As agreed with No Limits Sports there will be no further comment until the transaction is complete. This is to ensure that all of the club’s focus will be on the Championship run in.”

Alonso added: “We are proud and delighted to announce No Limits Sports Limited have approached the EFL for approval to be the new owners of Derby County Football Club, following agreement with the club’s current owner Mel Morris.”

News of the takeover has been greeted with caution by Rams fans.

While some are pleased that the saga looks to be heading for a conclusion, others are mindful of the failed takeover attempt by Derventio Holdings earlier this season.

At the beginning of November there was an agreement in principle with Derventio Holdings, a company set up by BZI, and the takeover was approved by the English Football League.

But the deal was not closed and eventually collapsed.

On fan said: “The deal is expected to be completed in the “near future”. Where have I heard that before.”

Another added: “Will believe it when I see it……maybe in the next 48 hours?”
