Chris Hughton confirmed yesterday that Sammy Ameobi still isn’t back in training. As a result, his chances of earning a Nottingham Forest stay are surely diminishing.
The 28-year-old has sat out the last four matches and Hughton’s comments perhaps suggest he will miss the final two games.
That doesn’t bode well for a player who will see his contract expire in the summer after two years at the City Ground.
Ameobi has divided opinion since checking in on Trentside. Signed on a free transfer from relegated Bolton, the jury remained out on the winger.
He quickly set about proving his critics wrong though. After an indifferent start he settled into the side and finished the season with five goals and nine assists.
Particularly good performances came at Stoke, against Leeds at home and against Swansea where he scored twice in a 2-2 draw.
This season has been a struggle though. The 28-year-old has scored just three times and registered two assists.
Two of his three goals came in one game against Millwall, with the other coming back in October against Rotherham.
Quite simply he’s struggled to get into his stride during 2020/21. He hasn’t been viewed as a regular under Hughton and that must be a cause for concern.
Although the boss has spoken fondly of the winger, he will be under no illusions that Forest are in need of reinforcements this summer.
In order to get the players he wants some tough decisions will need to be made and plenty of players will have to go.
Ameobi’s injury has come at the worst possible time and he might have played his last game in a Forest shirt.
