On-loan Forest defender Ioannou ‘positive about staying’ at Aris

Nottingham Forest loanee Nicholas Ioannou would like to stay at Aris Thessaloniki beyond the end of the season, it has been suggested.

The defender only made the move to the City Ground last summer and made five appearances for the Reds before heading out on loan in the winter window.

He has been in and out of the team for the Greek club, featuring six times – only once since the end of January – but did start three matches for Cyprus during the recent international fixtures.

And his father, Dimitris Ioannou, says the full-back would be happy to remain at Aris when his loan deal expires.

In an interview with Yellow Radio, via Sportime, he said: “He is happy with the facilities, with the team level that is high. This has to do with both the management of Aris and the coach.

“Nicholas belongs to Nottingham Forest, he is positive about staying (at Aris) but the two teams must find each other.

“Of course, it also depends on his appearances, on whether the people of Aris will be satisfied and will want to keep him.”

Ioannou signed a four-year deal with Forest when he joined from Cypriot outfit APOEL.

He was not involved for Chris Hughton’s side after being sent off against Luton Town in October, with the manager also having Yuri Ribeiro, Gaetan Bong and Tyler Blackett as left-back options.

Aris are currently second in the Greek top-flight, behind Olympiacos, and Dimitris hopes his son’s form for his country can help him in the league.

“I’m his father, it’s hard to talk about him,” he said. “It is certainly no coincidence that he has reached the Champions League. The issue of customization is not easy, it takes some time.

“I want to be fair with the coach who evaluates which players to use. Aris play very good football and the coach is justified (in his selection).

“I believe that Nicholas can play and help, but the choices are made by the coach. And you certainly can not say anything about the man who has Aris in second place with great performances.”

On Ioannou’s recent appearances for Cyprus, he added: “He justifies those who believed in Nicholas to bring him to Aris.

“These appearances will help him later. He has been out for a long time and now showing that he can play in three consecutive games is important.”
