Report: Championship club approach 23-year-old Nottingham Forest linked L1 star

Stoke City have made the first approach to sign Nottingham Forest target Stephen Humphrys from Rochdale, according to The 72.

The Reds were linked with the talisman last month, with Blackburn, Bristol City, Preston and Sheffield Wednesday also keen.

Dale will play their football in League Two next season and that makes it almost certain that they’ll lose their star man.

The 23-year-old scored 10 goals during 2020/21 and has also registered four assists for his teammates.

Humphrys will have just a single year left on his deal in the summer and it’ll be a final chance for Rochdale to recoup cash for their prized asset.

Forest have been mentioned in the conversation to sign the youngster, although Stoke look to have made the first move.

Like the Reds, Michael O’Neill has endured a frustrating campaign at the Bet365 Stadium.

After looking good for a play-off push earlier in the campaign, they have fallen away badly since the turn of the year.

Like Forest, they will go in search of more firepower for next season and appear to be keen on Humphrys.

The uncompromising striker signed for the Dale from Southend in September 2020 and has grown as a player.

Would Humphrys be a good addition to the Forest ranks?

Maybe, but he perhaps shouldn’t be at the top of the club’s list of targets.

Chris Hughton has spoken about the need to sign new players in the summer, with a desire on bolstering his attacking arsenal.

Forest will likely move quickly for their targets but the Rochdale man might not be an immediate priority.

With Lewis Grabban and Lyle Taylor both in their thirties, it seems clear that a younger striker is needed in the squad.

Humphrys ticks a lot of boxes but with just 10 goals to his name this season, perhaps Forest will go for someone slightly more clinical in front of goal.
