Report: Nottingham Forest and Rooney handed blow in quest to sign £5m-rated talisman

Nottingham Forest have been handed a blow in their quest to sign Plymouth Argyle striker Luke Jephcott during the summer transfer window.

It has been confirmed in the last 24 hours that the Pilgrims talisman has penned a new contract at the club.

The Wales under-21 international will no remain at Home Park until the summer of 2023 as he continues his development.

Forest, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday were all linked with Jephcott during the January transfer window.

Given the sums being touted, none of the Championship contingent chose to turn their interest into anything concrete.

Now the trio look to have missed out, with Jephcott tied to Plymouth for the foreseeable.

This uncompromising talisman wouldn’t have come cheap. Plymouth value their star player at £5 million.

In fairness, the links surrounding Jephcott had dropped quiet since the January window.

Jephcott came of age last season, scoring 18 goals for the Pilgrims and the interested parties will continue to monitor his progress with intrigue.

Interestingly, the goals did dry up for the striker. He hasn’t scored since a brace against Portsmouth in February.

With that in mind, perhaps he feels the best thing to do at this stage is to continue honing his skills at Plymouth.

Nonetheless, this looks like one name that Forest can scribble off their shortlist of targets.

Where do Forest turn after Jephcott update?

Fortunately, the Reds won’t have placed all their eggs in one basket so it’s perhaps not the end of the world.

The striker hadn’t scored since February anyway and paying £5 million for him would have been seen as a risk.

Jerry Yates and Charlie Wyke are two others names to have been linked and perhaps attentions will turn to one of those.

Forest have to make sure they get their summer business spot on. As a result, they must quickly get over the Jephcott setback.

Strikers will clearly be on the radar and only time will tell whether Forest missed a trick over the young talisman.
